Issue of €2 commemorative coin -

The Central Bank of Malta will be issuing its first €2 commemorative coin on 5 January 2009. The coin commemorates the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union. Each euro area country will be issuing a similar coin bearing the same design but with the name of the country and the legend ‘EMU 1999-2009’ shown in the respective language. The Maltese euro coin will have the legend ‘UEM 1999-2009’, where the letters UEM stand for ‘Unjoni Ekonomika u Monetarja’.

Slovakia joins the euro area -

On 1 January 2009 Slovakia becomes the 16th EU country to join the euro area. The euro will replace the Slovak koruna (SKK) at the irrevocably fixed exchange rate of EUR1 = SKK30.1260.

1 January 2009 also marks the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union and the creation of the euro as a currency.
Donation of books -

As part of its 40th anniversary activities the Central Bank of Malta will be presenting each secondary school and public library in Malta with a copy of each of four publications which the Bank has issued over a number of years. These publications are From Scudo to Sterling, Birgu – a Maltese Maritime City, Mdina – the Cathedral City of Malta and Currency in Malta.

Speech given by the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta at the annual dinner of the Institute of Financial Services Malta -In his speech the Governor speaks on the evolution and strength of the Maltese banking system, the turmoil in the world's financial markets, the response of the Eurosystem and the possible effects of global economic recession on the local economy - highlighting the importance that bank customers benefit fully from the recent cuts in official interest rates. The Governor also stresses the importance of central bank involvement in prudential regulation and better cross-border cooperation.

Exchange of Maltese lira at the Central Bank of Malta - The Central Bank of Malta will continue to exchange, at the irrevocably fixed conversion rate and without charge, Maltese lira coins until 1 February 2010 and Maltese lira banknotes until 31 January 2018.

The public is also asked to take note that exchanges are conducted only at the Bank’s Annex at St James’s Counterguard, Valletta, which is easily accessible from the bus terminus at City Gate.
